Elina Svitolina shattered the perfect comeback dream of Venus Williams by beating her in two sets at the 2023 Wimbledon.
Venus Williams made a return to the tennis courts at the Libema Open a few weeks ago under the watchful eye of sister Serena Williams. She lost that match but looked much better in Birmingham the following week winning one match before losing the next one. The veteran was cherishing the chance to play against knowing that there weren't that many in recent years.
Ahead of Wimbledon, Venus highlighted her excitement about being back at Wimbledon, especially after dealing with an injury nightmare. Well, the nightmare continued for the American as she tumbled in her match against Svitolina reinjuring her knee. She has been dealing with that knee ever since coming back and her going down in pain while screaming didn't make anybody feel good.
Even so, Williams opted to continue the match and fought bravely because, in the end, this is likely her final Wimbledon. It's abundantly clear that her body can't really handle the WTA Tour anymore making her retirement likelier than ever.
Svitolina took the opening set 6-4 behind really solid play overall. She served well, had 3 aces and added 15 winners to that. Williams kept herself afloat in the rallies thanks to her tremendous hitting ability but she couldn't do much more than that. She had far too many errors (17) to win the set.
The second one didn't go that much better either as she once again struggled to hit winners racking up unforced errors. Svitolina proved younger, fitter, and just more precise with her tennis having more winners than errors.
It's a simple game and most of the time that's plenty enough to win a match. The final score was 6-4 6-3 for Svitolina who moves on to face either Elise Mertens or Viktoria Hruncakova.
