Serena Williams has been rumored to return to tennis ever since she retired, but she gave a final verdict on those rumors.
The American retired at the 2022 US Open with an emotional swan song that saw her make the third round of the event. Weeks after she retired, the American was in the midst of rumors about potentially coming back to tennis in the future because of the vague wording used to describe it.
Per her own words, it wasn't a retirement but an 'evolution away from tennis', but she hasn't returned to the sport yet. In a recent interview with the New York Times for the premier of her documentary, Williams gave what appears to be a final verdict on whether she'll ever return to the sport.
The most recent wave of rumors exploded after Williams posted on X that she was ready to hit some balls again, which she confirmed in the interview was a true statement.
However, she realized that she shouldn't have written it on X because it made people think she was coming back to the sport when, in reality, she wasn't.
"It wasn’t cryptic. I literally am ready to hit balls. I haven’t hit in a long time. It’s my life, and I love it and I miss it so much. I did learn I shouldn’t post it on Twitter, because people think I’m coming back, and I’m like, 'No."- Williams on the exploding rumours of a comeback
Williams is no stranger to the PR game, and while it might have been an accident that she posted the cryptic message on X, making a rumors storm, it could have been also a great move ahead of the release of the documentary about her life.
At the end of the day, she's a successful businesswoman who has an enormous portfolio of investments, knowing what kind of reach she has on social media platforms and how much tennis fans want to see her on the tennis court again.
