'Serena Wasn't That Good When She Was 10' According To Former Coach Macci

Rick Macci is one of the people who knows Serena Williams' tennis journey the best, and he spoke about it recently.

The noted coach worked with many great players, such as Andy Roddick and both Serena Williams and Venus Williams. He watched the sisters blossom into one of the best players to ever hold a racquet, and he had something to do with it.

His coaching pedigree is still widely respected, with Coco Gauff naming him as one of the people she might work with to 'fix' her forehand. The legendary American coach was contacted by the ATP for an interview and shared some interesting facts about Serena Williams when she was much younger. According to Macci, Williams wasn't that good at ten but had all that was needed to become great.

When she was 10, Serena wasn’t that good. I had 10,000 parents look at that video and say that their kid was better than that, but they didn’t see what was under the hood. There were arms, legs, and head all over the place, but when I said to play competitive points, the whole landscape changed.

There was a rage. You don’t judge the book by the cover. It’s what I saw under the hood which was the wild card and that’s why she’s going to be the greatest of all time’.

Nothing that happened in Serena's career was down to luck. She worked extremely hard to win as much as she did, but as Macci said, there was a good mix of things that helped her get there. In an exclusive talk with Tennis Infinity, Macci correctly predicted Coco Gauff to win a Grand Slam, and it came true.

He also told us that she will dominate if she fixes her forehand, so let's see if he gets that right as well. The man has been rarely wrong when it comes to tennis.
