Running from October 16th to 22nd, the 2023 Stockholm Open will preserve its rich heritage among the oldest tennis tournaments on the ATP calendar.
This year's tournament marks its 54th edition, where 28 players will join the singles field vying to lift one of the most prestigious ATP 250s on the calendar, in addition to 250 rankings points that could be valuable for those players with a lot on the line this season - one of them being Holger Rune fighting for a spot at the ATP Finals.
The 20-year-old made quite the splash in last year's tournament. He ran the gauntlet, beating Cameron Norrie, Alex de Minaur, and Stefanos Tsitsipas to walk away with the title. It was in Stockholm when his late-season surge took off, and just a few weeks after that, he bagged his first Masters 1000 title in Paris.
Rune is the top seed in the entry list, but the formbook makes for grim reading. He is winless in his past seven matches across all competitions. The young Dane will be looking over his shoulder quite a lot given the formidable list of opponents who have signed up at this tournament.
Tallon Griekspoor punctured the world's Top 30, putting together the best year of his career. He's won titles in Pune and Hertogenbosch, and finished runner-up in Washington. Do not rule him out from making the business end in Stockholm. He will be the second seed.
Among the other notable seeds is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, seeded third, who reached the semifinal on the hard courts of Toronto, beating Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud in back-to-back matches. British one-hander is seeded fourth and one of the ATP Tour's titlists in 2023.
Argentina's Sebastian Baez became a hard-court champion in 2023 for the first time. He'll be one to keep an eye on, as are Jiri Lehecka and Christopher Eubanks who have exceeded expectations this year. All the aforementioned names along with Adrian Mannarino make up the top eight seeds.
Also in the 28-man lineup are two veterans: Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils. Wawrinka is making his first trip to Stockholm since 2011 and is still in pursuit of his first ATP title since his comeback from surgery.
Incidentally, Monfils won the tournament in that same year and will enter the 2023 edition with a protected ranking. Four players will join from the qualifying rounds in the weekend preceding the main draw action, while three players will be granted wild cards.
