Aryna Sabalenka didn't have the desired Wimbledon run she hoped for, but she did enough to stay first in the 2023 WTA Race to the Finals.
Sabalenka had a tremendous awakening in the second half of last year after spending her first half struggling with her tennis. That awakening continued this year as she put together an impressive Australian Open to win her maiden Grand Slam trophy.
That superb run gave her visible confidence as she started to play much better and put together some amazing performances that are still going on. She lost the match she could have won at Roland Garros and kind of did the same thing at Wimbledon, but she's still playing one of the more impressively consistent seasons in recent years.
The run at Wimbledon was going really well. She was widely considered to be the top favourite alongside Elena Rybakina simply because of how well her game fits with conditions in London. She was up on Ons Jabeur but then suffered a major collapse to lose the match.
It was unfortunate for her but she still did enough to emerge at the top of the WTA Race to the Finals which basically means that she's had the best season out of all players so far this year. The Belarusian now has 6 455 points which is quite a bit more than the second-placed Iga Swiatek with 5 685.
The rest of the field is quite far away, and it's clear that Sabalenka will be in a prime position to challenge Swiatek for the number one rank. She had a chance to do so at Wimbledon as she was only two games away from it, but ultimately didn't get it done.
It's still a dream for her but she admitted that finishing the year as number one is her main goal. So far so good for Sabalanka. She's on pace to do that.
