Aryna Sabalenka had a chance to secure the number one rank on the WTA Rankings, but she didn't get it done and will target to finish No. 1 at the end of the year.
This year's Wimbledon Championships were supposed to be very special for Aryna Sabalenka. She was coming back after getting denied the chance to play at the event last year, and it almost was a celebratory return.
She had a chance to secure the number one rank in the world, which she would have gotten if she had won the match against Ons Jabeur. Unfortunately for her fans, Sabalenka lost against the Tunisian, missing out on the chance to be world number one, but it's something that she still aims to do.
Speaking about this year's Wimbledon following the loss, Sabalenka touched upon that, explaining that she aims to secure the year-end No. 1 rank if she can though it will be tough. She has plenty of points to defend, but the distance is not huge, and it's going to be even smaller after this event.
I wouldn't say that I was thinking about that. I mean, for me it's more about how you finish the year than during the year you're first, second, you just go back and forth.
For me, it's more about finish the year. I'll keep pushing myself and do everything I can to finish this year as world No. 1.
It's a healthy mindset to have, but it's hard to imagine that she didn't want to secure number one, obviously she did. Finishing the year as the best player in the world is a more significant achievement than being number one in July, but still, it's a longstanding dream, and the sooner she gets it done, the better. For now, it's still Iga Swiatek on top.
