Editorial mistakes do happen, but Andy Roddick and many tennis fans were bewildered when they saw People magazine use pictures of Serena Williams in a piece about Venus Williams.
Serena Williams is the greatest female tennis player of all time. Many would agree, some would disagree, but making a case for her not being the greatest is far harder than making a case for her to be.
Her sister, Venus Williams, is a legendary tennis player in her own right. She won multiple Grand Slams in her career, both in singles and doubles, and she did it during an era when her sister was dominating the sport.
It makes it even more memorable, considering that she beat Serena en route to a couple of those titles. Recently, Venus had a story coming out about her in the People magazine.
The only problem with that was that a photo of her sister Serena was used for the cover instead, which stunned many tennis fans and those in the wider tennis community.
It’s not a minor mistake, either. Serena and Venus Williams are some of the most recognizable faces in tennis, and mixing them up is almost impossible.
People magazine did it, though, and former ATP player Andy Roddick found it incredible. He shed light on the situation on Twitter.
"Who’s gonna tell them that’s not Venus?"
Serena Williams's husband, Alexis Ohanian, reacted to it as well, as did some fans. One fan in particular highlighted that it was a shameful mistake from the respected publication.
"All these years, and they’re still getting the Williams sisters mixed up. They are shameful."
Another added that it was incredible that the sisters were still getting mixed up: "It’s weird and bad that news orgs constantly mix up the Williams sisters. Also worrisome that for this to be published it has to go through many checks and steps, so multiple failures."
