This year's Billie Jean King Cup Finals (BJKC) will be a momentous occasion for the world's largest annual team competition in women's sports, which will offer a record player prize money.
On Monday, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced that the 2023 Finals will provide monetary compensation to match that of the men's Davis Cup, and have committed a prize money purse of $9.6 million for the tournament.
This year's Billie Jean King Cup Finals got underway on Tuesday, November 7, with the first two ties in Group A. Australia played Slovenia, and defending champions Switzerland faced the much-fancied Czech Republic. The event is being played on indoor hard courts in Seville, Spain.
For the second consecutive season, the BJKC Finals will provide record paychecks equivalent to the levels offered at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals. The move has garnered widespread acclaim as tennis continues its fight to achieve gender pay parity.
"We are proud to announce this news on the eve of the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. Achieving gender parity in our sport is a key part of the ITF's Advantage All programme and I am delighted we have been able to offer equivalent prize money with the Davis Cup Finals again this year."
The 12 teams at the Finals will compete to win a fair share of the prize money purse of $9.6 million. The champions will receive $2.4 million, while the runner-up will earn $1.44 million. Semifinalists stand to gain $960,000. Even those who fail to get out of their respective groups will be compensated to the tune of $480,000.
Teams are split into four round-robin groups of three and the winners of each group will advance into the semifinal. All ties at the tournament will feature two singles matches followed by one doubles rubber.
