Petra Kvitova is officially out of the 2024 Australian Open after announcing her pregnancy recently, which is obviously the reason for the withdrawal.
It will be a while before we see Petra Kvitova back on the tennis courts as the Czech player recently announced her pregnancy. The veteran has now officially withdrawn from the first of many events that will follow as she embarks on a new chapter of her life.
Most probably, becoming a mother has been something she's thought about for a long time, and now is the time. After years of putting tennis first, Kvitova is slowly creating the type of life she wants by getting married last year and now expecting her first child.
She's been quite aware of her career slowly coming to an end in recent years, so it's not something she's not ready for. Runs like the one in Miami last year certainly prove that she has plenty more to give to the sport, but it's not the main focus for her, not after these many years of sacrifices.
Besides, she was pretty open about her surprise of winning that event as she didn't think it was possible anymore. We'll see whether that will be the last big one for the Czech player, as she'll likely return to the sport after becoming a mother.
As we've seen in recent years, it's not impossible to do so, and most who do get back and find a pretty good level. Time will tell, but for now, we'll have to get used to events without Kvitova for a while, probably this entire year.
A comeback might or might not happen in the future, but for now, this news withdrawal is great news for another player. Emma Raducanu hopes to avoid qualifiers for the Australian Open, and the withdrawal gets her on the cusp of achieving that.
