Petra Kvitova is expecting her first child after revealing the pleasant news on her Instagram on New Year's Day.

The two-time Wimbledon champion has been away from the tour since the start of October 2023, when she lost a second-round match at the China Open to Liudmila Samsonova. Having qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy, Kvitova withdrew from the consideration of competing at the tournament.

With tennis fans questioning about a possible injury, considering that she hasn't signed up to play in any Australian Open warm-up tournaments, Kvitova has finally spilled the beans about her supposed silence in one post on social media.

"On the first day of 2024 I wanted to wish you a happy new year and share the exciting news that Jiri and I will be welcoming a baby into our family this summer!"

Kvitova wed her longtime coach, Jiri Vanek, at Statek Oblik, a resort in the Bohemian Highlands, Czech Republic, in July 2023, after her round of 16 exits at Wimbledon. She played a full schedule in the second half of last season until October.

The 33-year-old's long-term future has been the subject of increased speculation, and it is not unlikely that she will partake in any tennis tournament before the European summer when she hopes to welcome her first child.

Kvitova confirmed the good news, posing with her husband and holding a picture of the ultrasound scan. The Czech lefty has enjoyed a fantastic season on the WTA tour in 2023, racking up titles in Miami and the grass in Berlin.

Kvitova registered 30 wins last season, her most productive return since 2019. She also finished in the world's Top 20 spots. Her name still appears in the official entry list at this year's Australian Open.

However, her participation is now doubtful. She's likely to become the second Czech woman to withdraw from the event, following Karolina Muchova, who is still nursing a wrist injury.
