Coco Gauff is back in Auckland, where she'll try to defend her trophy from last year at the ASB Classic, but the bigger goal is to win another Grand Slam.
2023 was an interesting year for Coco Gauff because it had highlights and some less good things happening. For example, she started last year by winning the Auckland event, which was the perfect way to start the year, but things went sideways after that.
It took her a long time to consolidate, and she started playing well again. It happened in the leadup to the US Open, where Gauff played really well, winning a few trophies. She then won the US Open, and that was enough to make the year a huge success.
She wants to replicate some of those things in 2024 and is back in Auckland hoping to start the year on a high note. Talking to stuff. co.nz, Gauff reflected back on 2023.
After Wimbledon I reached the lowest point of my career, losing that match. Learning from it helped me push forward and I think sometimes you need those setbacks to push you forward. Obviously, at the time I didn’t want to lose first round, but I think that’s what I needed.
Now, looking ahead to 2024, Gauff doesn't really feel any added pressure. To her, it's just a new season with the 2023 in the history books already. She's not thinking about it too much and is focused on winning more in the future.
The goal was always to win multiple (grand slams). It’s the same goal, there are mini-goals along the way and it was the biggest goal for me that year, but considering my whole career and my goals, that was just a stepping stone. I don’t feel like I have to reset anything. If anything, it makes it more believable that I can do what I want to do.
