Coco Gauff and Ben Shelton's superb seasons have led to both players being handed the same honour on a joint basis.
There had been concern during the last decade about the state of tennis in the USA, and of a possible long-term decline in the number of top players coming through who can challenge for the biggest honours.
Gauff, who is set to reunite with Jessica Pegula at the 2024 Australian Open, and Shelton have played a big role in changing those perceptions. This is especially true of Gauff, who has inspired millions.
19-year-old Gauff and 21-year-old Shelton undoubtedly represent the future of tennis on both the ATP and WTA Tours. That reality is represented by the name of the honour given to both players.
Gauff and Shelton have been named as ESPN's breakthrough players of the year. The sports broadcaster also named Christopher Eubanks' run to the Wimbledon quarterfinal as the best moment of the year.
The main reason for Gauff's breakthrough last season is obvious. She became the youngest American player to win the US Open since 17-year-old Serena Williams in 1999. Her run was unforgettable and included a dramatic comeback from a set down in the final against Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff also won her first WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati. Both these triumphs coincided with bringing Brad Gilbert onto her coaching team, and he did seem to make a big difference.
Shelton, who wants to play big matches in Australia, started the year as the world No. 96. However, he rose steeply up the rankings after thrilling crowds during runs to the quarterfinal at the Australian Open and semifinal at the US Open.
The 21-year-old also won a maiden ATP 500 title in Tokyo, which included an incredible comeback from 5-2 down in the deciding set in the final against Marcos Giron.
Both players made excellent progress last season, and neither should be begrudged the recognition they have received as a result.
