The first Grand Slam tournament of the 2024 season is on the horizon, and the entry list for the women's edition of the Australian Open has been released.
Running from January 14th to 28th, next year's Australian Open will have a historic Sunday start. One hundred twenty-eight women will compete in the biggest party of Australian summer, but only one player will be lucky enough to emerge from the fortnight with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
The Australian Open is played on outdoor hard courts at its famed home - Melbourne Park. It's been ten years since there was a successful title defense in the women's tournament, so is that trend likely to continue, or will Belarus Aryna Sabalenka defend the crown she won 12 months ago?
Looking at the entry list, Iga Swiatek will be the top seed for the second year in a row thanks to her scintillating run of form towards the end of last season, which enabled her to reclaim the World No. 1 ranking. The woman she represented at the summit is the defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, who will be seeded at No. 2.
Coco Gauff's career-best year in 2023 yielded a Grand Slam title and a new career-high ranking of World No. 3. The young American will be among the favorites to add to her Grand Slam trophy cabinet. Last year's finalist, Elena Rybakina, is the fourth seed.
USA's Jessica Pegula hasn't reached the semifinal stage and beyond at a major. Could 2024 be her breakthrough year? That will be fascinating to see. Three Czech players are among the Top 10 seeds, led by Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
Tunisia's Ons Jabeur is reportedly not looking to play any warmup events. The three-time Grand Slam finalist is still itching to get her hands on one of the coveted four trophies in tennis. Greece's Maria Sakkari is also among the Top 10 seeds.
As many as seven players are using a Special Ranking (SR) to play at the 2024 Australian Open, which has reduced the cut-off entry mark to 99. However, with many withdrawal, British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu also made it to the main draw.
Two players using SR are returning mothers and former Australian Open champions. These are Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, who last featured on tour in 2022. Newlywed Shelby Rogers is making a comeback from injury, having missed the entire second half of 2023.
Rogers' compatriot, Amanda Anisimova, will rejoin the tour next season. Anismova is coming off a mental health break.
There were also many notable withdrawals, as world no. 8, Karolina Muchova withdrew from the tournament, as well as two-time semifinalist Madison Keys, and Jennifer Brady also announced her withdrawal. The entry list for the 2024 Australian Open women's tournament is below.
