Former WTA World No. 1 Martina Navratilova shared that she was diagnosed with not one but two cancers but declared to fight for her health.
Navratilova was one of the most successful tennis players in the history of the sport. In her tennis career, she has achieved everything achievable, collecting a total of 59 Grand Slam titles across all disciplines.
She won 18 singles major, 31 in doubles, and 10 more in the mixed doubles. She also holds the Open Era record for the most singles titles (167) and doubles titles (177). Of course, she was also the WTA World No. 1 player in both singles and doubles.
But unfortunately, life and health don't look at achievements. Despite her success on the tennis court, Navratilova now started another battle, this time away from the courts, after being diagnosed with not one but two cancers.
According to BBC, Navratilova first noticed a lymph node on her neck during the 2022 WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, where she was present as one of the pundits.
She then underwent tests, which revealed also another cancer in her breast. Navratilova released a statement after learning the news, saying that while her cancer is serious, it is also fixable, which is why she will fight it.
"This double whammy is serious but still fixable. I’m hoping for a favorable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while, but I’ll fight with all I have got."
Unfortunately, this is not the first time for Navratilova that she has to battle cancer, as she was previously diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010.
Luckily, like the last time, the prognosis looks very good. Navratilova's representative, Mary Greenham, said that both cancers were caught in the early stages.
"Both of these cancers are in their early stages with great outcomes."
