Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, revealed that she has been diagnosed with both throat cancer and breast cancer.
Navratilova, who won a record nine Wimbledon singles titles and is considered one of the pioneers of women's tennis, made the announcement stating: “This double whammy is serious but still fixable,” said the 66-year-old in a statement. “I’m hoping for a favorable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while, but I’ll fight with all have I got.”
The news of Navratilova's diagnosis has sent shockwaves through the sports world and beyond, with many expressing their support and well wishes for the 66-year-old. Navratilova, who is known for her competitive spirit and determination, plans to fight the diseases with the same tenacity that she brought to the tennis court.
She underwent testing after seeing an enlarged lymph node in her neck at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth back in November. Doctors eventually found Stage 1 breast cancer and Stage 1 throat carcinoma at that time. In particular, it is the human papillomavirus (HPV), one of the most curable malignancies.
Throughout her career, Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and 31 Grand Slam doubles titles, making her one of the most successful players in the history of the sport. She was also known for her activism and dedication to social causes, and has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights.
While Navratilova's diagnosis is certainly difficult news, she has made it clear that she is not backing down and will do everything in her power to overcome these challenges. The outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes serves as a testament to the admiration and respect that Navratilova has earned throughout her career.
