Madison Keys is out of the Canadian Open in Montreal due to an injury, joining a growing list of players that have pulled out.

Madison Keys was playing pretty solid tennis lately winning a couple of matches at the Citi Open in Washington. She's always been a very good player on hard courts and loved playing at this time of the year.

The good form from Washington translated to Montreal, where she defeated compatriot Venus Williams in a very competitive 1st round match, however, she's out of the WTA 1000 event now. The reason for the pull-out was an injury that she sustained in that highly competitive match against Venus Williams.

It comes at a terrible time with the Cincinnati Masters around the corner and, more importantly, the US Open. It's an injury to the glute muscle, which can be tricky, but the hope is that Keys will make a swift recovery.

The news of her withdrawal came with a short statement from the player who said that she was looking forward to returning to the event in the future.

I always love playing in Montreal and I’m so sorry to be leaving early. I know the fans will enjoy a great week of tennis, and I look forward to returning in the future.

It's unclear how severe the injury is and what sort of impact it will have on her upcoming matches. She's still in the Cincinnati draw but obviously, the US Open is the most important event so she won't risk an early return that might compromise the major.

Unfortunate stuff but it's a growing list of players who withdrew from the event with injuries. Victoria Azarenka was another player who was forced to pull out ahead of her round two match against American Sloane Stephens.
