Caroline Wozniacki won her first match back to tennis and she'll face Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the Canadian Open.
Both Wozniacki and Vondrousova won their first matches at the Canadian Open. For the latter, it was the first match since the Wimbledon triumph and after a nervous start, Vondrousova cruised to win in two. She admitted to feeling some nerves before the match but stabilized as the match went on.
Wozniacki herself had a shaky start in her match but quickly found her rhythm to also win in two sets. The matches were very similar with players who dominated but faced some early nerves. This one promises to be a very different one as both will be fully aware of what awaits on the other side.
Despite both being professionals for a while, this will be their first match ever. Stylistically it's a very interesting one between a very precise baseliner in Vondrousova and the antidote to that kind of style Wozniacki.
Matches with Wozniacki are rather long because there are very few short rallies. Vondrousova likes to keep it compact and use her precision to create an opening which she then attaches. Wozniacki made most of her money breaking down opponents like that acting as a wall that sends every ball back.
Even after her break that didn't change. She largely destroyed her opponent but still took over 90 minutes to get it done. We might see a very long one here but it's a great test for Wozniacki because she's facing a reigning Grand Slam champion, a top 10 player who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics on hard courts.
For Vondrousova, it's a chance to score a big win which should give her confidence for the rest of the event. Tricky one to call but I think Vondrousova will get it done.
Prediction: Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets.
