One day after producing a superb performance to take down Veronika Kudermetova, Sofia Kenin was nearly beaten, but she mounted a comeback to win in three sets at the 2023 San Diego Open.

The American faced fellow American Katie Volynets and failed to produce the same level she had yesterday early on but eventually got there as the match progressed. Kenin has had a very strange season so far, with some impressive performances and some shockers.

It's clear that she's not playing near her best, certainly not near the level she had when she won the Australian Open but consecutive wins like this help her regain that confidence. Volynets is a rising player, a player capable of becoming one of the better ones in the world, and she showed some skills in this matchup.

The start of the match was an excellent one for the younger American as she jumped out to an early lead, never letting up though she was greatly helped by Kenin. She was all over the place misfiring badly in most rallies.

The second didn't offer anything different to start because Volynets jumped out to an early 2-1 lead, but Kenin pulled it back immediately. Volynets would break once more taking a 3-2 lead but once agains she failed to confirm it giving Kenin one more chance.

She wasn't broken this time, going up 4-3, which proved crucial. She would keep pushing and actually win the second set 6-4, which wasn't shocking because she played quite a bit better and was the favourite to win the match anyway.

The final set was very similar to the second half of the second set, as Kenin was now pushing her opponent around quite a bit and eventually got the break that sealed the win. The final score was 1-6 6-4 6-2 for Kenin.
