Iga Swiatek vs Jessica Pegula: 2023 WTA Finals - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

After days of struggling, we're finally here, the 2023 WTA Finals final, where Iga Swiatek will try to beat Jessica Pegula and vice versa.

It's been a really strange WTA Finals so far with so many unfortunate things happening, but we're finally at the end of it. The weather cooperated pretty well on Sunday, allowing the matches to be completed, so on Monday, we'll see Swiatek take on Pegula.

It should have happened yesterday, but after Swiatek's match was postponed, it didn't seem fair to have her play two matches while Pegula would have played one. In any case, this is the deserved final, as both Pegula and Swiatek played amazing tennis all week long.

Neither lost a single set en route to the final and won all matches comfortably. Swiatek is actually on a 10-match winning streak as well, while the American won nine consecutive matches.

Head-to-head:

The head-to-head certainly favours Swiatek, but Pegula has beaten her before. Actually, this year, it's 2-1 for Pegula, which indicates that this can be a troublesome matchup for Swiatek.

Pegula is one of the best pure hitters on Tour, and that can give Swiatek some trouble. The American doesn't move as well as her Polish counterpart, but she doesn't need to if she's going to outhit her from the baseline.

Prediction:

Even with the hitting advantage, I do think that Swiatek will win this match. She's favoured for a reason, and I think the conditions here simply favour her a bit more. That doesn't mean that she'll win but I think she has the higher chance.

The match will be competitive either way because we have two great players who are in form and battling for a trophy. Still, I just don't see how Pegula will overcome the super solid and confident Swiatek.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
