'I Try To Take It Off': Jabeur Jokes About Seeing Rybakina's Picture At Wimbledon

| by Evita Mueller

Ons Jabeur is back at Wimbledon and the Tunisian is looking to fix what went wrong for her last year when she lost in the final.

Jabeur has contested two Grand Slam finals so far in her career and lost both times. It was an unfortunate situation for a player who is really keen on making history as the first Arab woman and the first African woman to win a Grand Slam. It's something she feels could inspire a lot of people which is one of the things she is mindful of.

Being an inspiration is something she takes seriously and she wants to inspire many young girls on her continent to pick up the racquet and become a force on the WTA Tour in the future. The Wimbledon final was particularly annoying for Jabeur as she won the opening set only to fail at finishing the job.

It's coming back right now. People mentioning I'm the finalist of last year. It's not great going in the locker room and seeing Elena's picture, but I try to take it off (laughter).

Jabeur on last year's Wimbledon

This year has been somewhat shaky for Jabeur who dealt with a couple of injuries on top of just shaky play. Her Roland Garros run ended badly and she's looking to finally turn the page. Wimbledon is a great player place to do that.

It's very nice, having the attention. You did a Grand Slam final. It's not a bad thing. It's something that it's great. Maybe sometimes I didn't see it that way because obviously I wanted to go for the title.

But again, a final is a great final, it's a Grand Slam final. I just want to use that experience, use the pressure that I felt last year, to maybe do better this year.

She looked at last year's event through the lens of Netflix and it was quite emotional. That's what it's all about for Jabeur, just creating those memories while trying to win. The goal is to win trophies but it's not the only thing that matters. It's about enjoying her time on the court because at one point in the future her career will finish.

I watched Netflix. It was about Wimbledon, the episode. It was very emotional for us. It's tough to look back at the final. But again, my first goal here is to really enjoy playing on grass, maybe recreate greater memories like last year or the year before.
