Andy Murray won Wimbledon the last time he played a Brit in the first round and he joked about that ahead of this year's event.
Andy Murray wants to win Wimbledon, it's a clearly stated goal for him and he thinks he can get it done. It will be tough to do and unlikely to happen but not impossible. Impossible is nothing after all and Murray is actually the only player to have beaten Djokovic at Wimbledon out of the whole field taking part in the event.
The last time he won the event, was in 2016 when he defeated Milos Raonic in the final. It was a brilliant run from him as he dropped only two sets in the seven matches he played. The first-round match was against compatriot Liam Broady. He was asked whether he remembers that considering that he's facing a compatriot in the first round this year as well.
Brilliant. Great. Can we start celebrating now (smiling)?
He put a lot of work in before Wimbledon playing a lot of matches and winning most of them. It's been a far better preparation than last year and he's confident about his ability to play well. We'll see whether this omen actually ends up being true. Murray doesn't personally believe in them as he explained.
Yeah, I don't really. Yeah, I mean, I actually have not played against many Brits at Wimbledon before. I don't know, maybe that was the last time that happened or maybe the only time. I'm not sure how many Brits I've played.
His opponent in the first round will be Ryan Peniston, a fellow Brit who was a rather unique story having battled and beat cancer earlier in his life. It's not an easy task for Murray as they know each other well and Peniston loves to play on grass.
I know him pretty well. We practiced together quite a lot. He obviously likes playing on the grass courts. Yeah, he's had some good wins on the surface. Yeah, lefty. Moves very well. I need to be ready for that one.
Things won't get any easier for Murray if he wins that match and he's expected to. He will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem in round two and while neither are great grass players they are still capable.
