Andy Murray saw his 10-match winning streak on grass snapped by Alex de Minaur denying him a seeded spot at Wimbledon.
Andy Murray began his grass season in Surbiton two weeks ago with a clear goal of making himself a seed at Wimbledon. It was a complicated undertaking as the Brit needed some fascinating results to achieve that. He did the first part by winning the trophy in Surbiton making it possible.
He then added another trophy in Nottingham making it within reach. The math was simple. One win in Queen's would give him a chance to be a seed but two wins would ensure it. The draw was less than favourable giving him a good grass player in De Minaur. The problem is actually bigger as Murray doesn't play well against De Minaur.
He lost earlier this year on clay in what looked like a beatdown and the match at the 2023 Cinch Championships didn't go that better. De Minaur once again beat Murray 6-3, 6-1 shattering his dream of being a seed at Wimbledon. After the match, Murray gave an assessment of where he currently stands.
Look, I mean, obviously after today, you know, it's easy to overreact. Well, no, I lost to a good player and it was obviously very comfortable, but, you know, at the same time, over the last couple of weeks, yes, it's obviously not the same level of opponents.
This defeat didn't really shake Murray too much as he's still content with the level he produced leading up to Wimbledon. He is fully confident in his level and the ability to play against some of the best players on this surface.
You know, and the practices and everything I had before those tournaments too with some good players, top players, you know, I was doing just fine as well. So I'm comfortable with that. I know my level is there to compete with the top players.
