Marketa Vondrousova missed last year's Wimbledon Championship due to a wrist injury, and just a year later, she lifted the trophy.
It's been a crazy year for Marketa Vondrousova, but she's had a really interesting career trajectory as well. From a breakout at Roland Garros a few years ago and a run to the final to injuries and then another spectacular run in 2021.
It was the Olympics that time as she marched her way to the final, losing to Belinda Bencic and getting the silver medal in the end. Now, two years after that, Vondrousova overcame some more injuries to find herself in another big final, and this time around, she secured the grand prize.
It's been a very up-and-down ride, one she talked about in her talk after the match. From having a cast on her hand at this time last year to lifting the trophy this year; a very uncertain journey. She certainly had doubts about being able to hit her peak again.
Yeah, I had a cast last year at that time. It was impossible. I was watching my best friend here playing quallies. I was a tourist here. Yeah, when I was coming back, I didn't know what's going to happen, if I can play at that level again. Yeah, I mean, this seems impossible.
Even, like, I don't know, on grass I didn't play well before. I think it was the most impossible Grand Slam for me to win, so I didn't even think of it. When we came, I was just like, Try to win couple of matches. Now this happened, it's crazy.
She's not the only one who was surprised by this as Ons Jabeur described this loss as the most painful one of her career and for good reason. She was the heavy favourite and this was her best chance to win a Grand Slam out of all the three she played.
