Coco Gauff is a Grand Slam champion and is now only missing being number one on the WTA Tour, which will come, according to former player Marion Bartoli.
Coco Gauff has now done the same thing Marion Bartoli did in her career; she's won one Grand Slam but is yet to become world number one in singles. Gauff did it a while ago in doubles, but it's not the one she's after, and according to Bartoli, who spoke to Tennis Majors, she'll get it eventually.
The talent for it was always there, but it will take some maturation from the American who showed a great deal of maturity at the US Open. The final wasn't the best final, as both players certainly could have done better, but she problem-solved on the spot, and that's what Bartoli took away from it. It's just the ability to adapt and squeeze out a win.
She was struggling big time, and the way for me she has been able to just handle all of that, finding solutions [impressed me]. She didn’t play her best tennis, either, but still won a Slam. There are just so many positives. She’s definitely not a fluke.
None of this came as a surprise to Bartoli because she was on site for her first venture into a Grand Slam final. It was clear as day back then that sooner or later she was going to be back and try to lift the bigger trophy this time around.
She’s done it and she did it through her own skill, her ability to problem solve on the court coming from behind so many times at that US Open. You have to remember she got to the Roland-Garros final last year. This has been coming. It’s been coming and she just needed that extra little tweak. I think she will definitely be world number one at some stage.
Now it's about adding a few more and actually becoming world number one. It shouldn't be a problem if she remains healthy and luckily she's been very healthy so far in her career. There is just an undeniable drive within Gauff.
She’s so driven and she wants that so much.
