'Didn't Think It Was Highest Quality Match': Sharapova On Gauff's US Open Triumph

Coco Gauff is a Grand Slam champion after the most recent US Open, and Maria Sharapova was happy to see her win her first Grand Slam on native soil.

Not many had Coco Gauff winning her maiden Grand Slam on their bingo card for 2023 and for much of this year, it was clear why. She was playing another stagnant season without any kind of real sense of improvement.

Her early Wimbledon loss to Sofia Kenin further highlighted that, but her incredible turnaround in the coming weeks was something to see. It culminated with the US Open run and the final, which Maria Sharapova didn't feel the match was of the highest quality. Even so, she was happy to see Gauff win.

Yes, yes, I couldn’t miss that, I just felt like it was a match that would.. seeing Coco on that stage and all the expectations from the beginning of the tournament umm.. I didn’t think it was the highest quality of match because there were so much nerves on I think on both sides umm.. I was so happy to see Coco win.

She was one of many happy to see Gauff win because she deserved it. She played the best and wrestled control of the match against a Grand Slam-winning player and world number one, Aryna Sabalenka. It was a transcending moment for Gauff, one Sharapova saw in her years ago.

I have been saying this for years I think she has the ability to transcend the sport into so many.. bridging entertainment and sport and culture and fashion. She has got such a great voice and and most importantly she is an amazing competitor which is just like the full package and it came together for her in New York City. So I wanted to be there.
