Coco Gauff has expanded her schedule even further, accepting a wild card for the 2023 Zhengzhou Open.
As the most recent Grand Slam champion, the young American is probably the most talked-about player on the WTA Tour. She became the youngest American to win the US Open since Serena Williams, and there were many firsts and bests that she achieved with her win at Flushing Meadows.
After a little break from tennis, Gauff is making her return at the 2023 China Open in Beijing, a WTA 1000 tournament which runs from September 30th until October 8th. And now it seems, that since the 19-year-old will be already present in China, she wants to use her time efficiently.
Gauff already qualified for the WTA Finals, so she doesn't really need to add any points to her total, of course, except for a world no. 1 chase which will soon become a reality. But it seems that the teenager still has a lot in her tank, as she added another tournament to her schedule.
It's the 2023 Zhengzhou Open, held immediately after the tournament in Beijing, as the WTA 500 tournament runs from October 9th to 15th. The entry list for the 2023 Zhengzhou Open is stacked, and it includes the two most recent Wimbledon champions, Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova.
According to renowned journalist Reem Abulleil, Gauff will join the list of Grand Slam champions at the tournament, as she has been awarded a wild card, becoming the top seed at the event, and adding it as her second tournament as a Grand Slam champion.
It will be certainly interesting to follow whether the 19-year-old will be able to follow up on her previous success, and if she does, even the world no. 1 spot is not so far away. Currently, the American trails the first-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the 2023 WTA Race by 2590 points, and the China Open, along with the Zhengzhou Open can earn her more than half of that, with the WTA Finals yet to come.
