Coco Gauff is through to the Cincinnati Masters semi-final after beating Italian Jasmine Paolini in two simple sets.
Gauff was the heavy favourite before this match, and she justified that with her play on the court. She's been pretty stellar recently, winning the trophy at the Citi Open. After that, we saw her playing really well at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal, but she was beaten by Jessica Pegula.
The semi-final will be happening here as she faces Jasmine Paolini, a solid player but one who booked a spot here thanks to the retirement of Elena Rybakina. She had moments in this match, but for the most part, Gauff managed to control the match really well.
Paolini actually opened the match with a break and a 2-0 lead, but it was rather quickly that Gauff found a good rhythm to turn around the match. She went on a 4-game run to take a 4-2 lead and held in comfortably for the 6-3 opening set finish.
Paolini simply struggled to weather the storm against Gauff who kept coming at her with a lot of force. The second set was very similar to the first one. Paolini once again jumped out to an early lead as the American missed a bit but rather quickly Gauff was able to return the match under her control.
She went on a run once more, but this time around, she won six games in a row to finish off the match. Paolini struggled greatly on her second serve as it was attacked by Gauff immediately. Most of the chances came after the Italian missed the second serve, and Gauff converted six of 14 she had.
The final score was 6-4 6-2 for the American, who moved on to face Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals. Swiatek beat Marketa Vondrousova earlier today.
