Gauff & Pegula Set To Lose World No. 1 Spot Already After One Week

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will lose the number one spot in the doubles WTA Rankings after Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova won the 2023 San Diego Open.

For a few weeks now, we've seen Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula being on the cusp of becoming world number one in the doubles. Of course, Gauff was already doubles number one in her career but Pegula never achieved it. Some results would have ensured that they were sharing the number one rank but it eluded them for a while.

They've had a few great chances this year to get it done, but it only happened at the US Open, and it happened because other results made it possible. They actually failed to win the match that would ensure them, but thanks to their opponents later losing, the American duo secured the No. 1 spot.

The happiness lasted only for a while though as they're going to be replaced after one week by Katerina Siniakova. The Czech player produced a really strong effort with doubles partner Barbora Krejcikova to win the San Diego Open.

Krejcikova actually won the singles earlier in the day and then returned for double duty to win the doubles final as well. The win gives Siniakova 470 points, which is enough to jump over both Gauff and Pegula in the rankings. She'll have 6094 points while Gauff and Pegula will remain at 6035.

It's not particularly important to either, as Gauff was number one before and lost it. It was a nice milestone for Pegula, but singles is definitely what she cares about the most. Neither will be in action this week in Guadalajara, but they will have a chance to reclaim the spot later in the season.

Gauff is certainly going to take a longer break to recover properly while Pegula might return earlier though it's unclear at what event. Either way, Katerina Siniakova replaces the duo as new
