Iga Swiatek proved quite clumsy during the trophy ceremony, losing the lid of the Roland Garros trophy for a moment.
Iga Swiatek finished off another two great weeks in Paris with the trophy. Despite being down a break twice in the final set of her match against Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek ended up as the winner with a furious comeback. She won her 3rd Roland Garros trophy and 4th Grand Slam trophy overall.
Despite being an experienced Roland Garros trophy lifter, Swiatek still committed a pretty big faux pas during the ceremony. She shook the trophy without holding the lid which made it fall off until French Tennis Federation president Gilles Moretton didn't pick it up and handed it back to her. It was pretty funny for an unintentional situation.
Yeah, I'm sorry for that.
Obviously, besides the standard question about how she felt during the match and what winning the trophy meant to her, Swiatek was also asked about this situation. She explained that she knew that there is a lid but she felt she had a finger on it.
Honestly felt like I'm holding it with my finger, so I guess all these emotions, I don't know, caused that. Sorry. I don't mean to be disrespectful. I'm glad that Suzanne Lenglen trophy is fine and it won't happen again probably, but we'll see (smiling). I just hope I'm gonna have a chance to hold it again in future years.
Swiatek also reflected on the journey in the past two weeks and being able to finish on a high note. The recovery time will be short as Wimbledon is coming up in a month and doing well on grass is something she hopes to do. Historically, it's been her weakest surface as she didn't play much on it.
