The run of Mirra Andreeva at Wimbledon ended with a loss to Madison Keys; she explained after the match why she didn't shake hands with the umpire.
Mirra Andreeva has had a really strong Wimbledon as she made her way through the qualifiers to book a spot in the main draw. The Russian followed up on that solid performance with a couple of wins in the main draw, nearly making the quarter-final as well. It created an even bigger frenzy than before.
The quarter-final didn't happen because she lost to Keys but overall it was a very interesting match. She won the opening set but couldn't outplay the American down the line as the match finished after three sets. The end of the match in particular featured a sequence that began with her receiving a point penalty which gave Keys the match point.
Andreeva got a code violation earlier in the match for throwing her racquet and the umpire gave her another one for the same thing in the final game. The Russian wasn't happy with that as she explained that she slipped with the racquet flying out of her hand because of that.
Fans pointed out after the match that the replay did indeed show that it looked very unintentional. Andreeva explained after the match that she had no intention of throwing the racquet though it might have looked that way.
For me it's a controversial point because I'm not sure if -- I don't know which decision was right. She's the umpire. She's the one who makes the decision. But, honestly, I didn't have any intention to throw the racquet. I slid. Honestly, I thought that I will fall forward.
Maybe it did look like I threw the racquet. I don't know. I didn't see any videos yet. But that was her decision to make, so she made this decision. Now that's it. She made the decision, so the match is over now.
She also explained why she ultimately refused to shake hands with the umpire noting that the decision was wrong in her opinion and that's why.
I mean, yes, because for me, she didn't do a right decision for me. Yes, that's why I didn't want to shake hands to her.
