It has only been a few weeks since the most brutal moment of Jannik Sinner's career, but he still enters the 2025 Wimbledon Championships as the ATP world No. 1.
Sinner had three championship points to win the 2025 Roland Garros final, but Carlos Alcaraz staged an astonishing recovery to triumph in a deciding set tiebreak and confirm back-to-back titles.
The gap to Sinner at No. 1 was reduced in last week's rankings after Alcaraz won the 2025 Queen's Club Championships. During the same week, Sinner lost in the 2025 Halle Open round of 16 to Alexander Bublik.
Neither Sinner nor Alcaraz played last week, so the gap between them remains the same. Sinner is on 10,430 points, while Alcaraz is on 9,300 points, the smallest margin between the Italian and the world No. 2 for several months.
However, Alcaraz cannot overtake Sinner as the world No. 2 after Wimbledon because he is defending a massive number of points from his title run at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The best he can do is avoid losing any points.
Alcaraz will have an opportunity to become No. 1 again in the closing months of the season. Sinner has points to defend from titles at the US Open, Cincinnati Open, Shanghai Masters, and the ATP Finals.
There were no changes to the Top 10. Alexander Zverev is No. 3, Jack Draper is No. 4, Taylor Fritz is No. 5, Novak Djokovic is No. 6, Lorenzo Musetti is No. 7, Holger Rune is No. 8, Daniil Medvedev is No. 9, and Ben Shelton is No. 10.
Fritz won a fourth consecutive title at last week's 2025 Eastbourne Open. That was not enough to propel him ahead of Draper because the American defended the points he won at the 2024 iteration of the event.
João Fonseca came close to beating Fritz in the round of 16 in Eastbourne. The teenage star took him to a deciding set, but ultimately fell 5-7 after a match packed with enthralling shot-making from him in the rallies.
Although the loss was undoubtedly tough, Fonseca performing that well on a surface he is not familiar with was a great achievement. It bodes well for him in the coming years.
Understandably, Alexander Bublik pulled out of the Eastbourne Open after winning the 2025 Halle Open the previous week. His run in Germany made some wonder whether he is a dark horse for this year's Wimbledon title.
Bublik dropped one place to No. 31. That probably will not bother the Kazakhstani much since he is already seeded for Wimbledon. His first match will be on Tuesday against Jaume Munar, whose level against Alcaraz at the Queen's Club led to an outburst from the 22-year-old.
Tallon Griekspoor's reward for winning the 2025 Mallorca Open title was rising five positions to No. 29. The mercurial and often fiery Corentin Moutet finished as the runner-up, and jumped 14 spots to No. 69.
Some of the other changes to the ATP rankings include Denis Shapovalov's fall to No. 30 and Marin Cilic moving up two spots to No. 83.
