Holger Rune lost in the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, and he didn't hold back in the assessment of what happened on the court in his post-match press conference.
It seemed that Rune was cruising towards an easy win in his first-round match at Wimbledon. The Danish player took on Nicolas Jarry, and despite the Chilean's serving qualities, Rune led 6-4, 6-4 after the first two sets were played.
The third set got close to being decided in a tie-break, but ultimately, Jarry broke at the last possible moment, winning the set 7-5. Rune started struggling with a knee problem, and eventually, he lost the match 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 4-6.
It was a disappointing loss for the young Danish player, not only because he lost, but also because it wasn't because of his level, but because of a physical issue that prevented him from competing at his highest level.
After the match, Rune spoke to the press in London, as per Puntodebreak, discussing what happened during the match. The 22-year-old explained that since he started to feel pain in his knee in the third set, he could not play like he did before.
"I think I started the match well, playing good tennis. Then the third set was a bit unfortunate. In the fourth set, I started to feel the knee and received treatment. From that moment on, I was never able to serve or hit my backhand the way I did in the first two sets."
Naturally, with the tennis season moving quickly, Rune was asked about the nature of the injury. He will now have at least two weeks to get healthy, but after that, the 2022 Paris Masters champion will want to be back on the court.
Rune explained that it is a problem that he experienced before, but he didn't expect it to return, as it happened quite some time ago.
"I've had it before, but it's been a while since then, I don't know. I know what it is, and especially playing extremely low on the grass, that area can be bothersome. Obviously, I didn't expect him to come back, but that can happen. We'll see, I'll check with the doctor and physio now and make a decision. It's something I've experienced before, we need to verify it with the medical staff."
At the end of the press conference, Rune surprised some in the room with his assessment of Jarry's level. The Danish player thinks that he could beat Jarry nine out of ten times, but this time, he couldn't do it because of the physical issue.
"If I play normally, I beat him nine out of ten times, with all due respect to Nicolas Jarry. Obviously, today wasn't easy for me with my knee, but yes, it wasn't great."
