Mirra Andreeva's run at the Cleveland Open is over as native player Sloane Stephens beat the youngster in two sets.
Andreeva opened her North American hard court season at the Cleveland Open totally skipping both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters. It was an interesting choice by the youngster who will travel to New York for the US Open after this event.
Beating Stephens was always going to be problematic for Andreeva because the American has been playing on a really high level recnetly. The match was plyed over two days as it was pospoted in the second set before on Wednesday night.
The opening set was concluded before that, and it saw Stephens dominate pretty well overall. She barely lost points on her serve and did just enough on the serve of Andreeva, though she used only one of the six break points she had.
The second set was pretty similar as Stephens dominated even more while Andreeva continued to struggle. The Amerian was just too powerful from the baseline, overwhelming the teenage Andreeva easily. The match was stopped at 4-3 for Stephens, with the American winning that game easily upon resumption.
She would finish off the match in the next game by breaking the Russian once more. The final score was 6-3 6-3 for Stephens who moves on to face Sara Sorribes Tormo in the quarter-final. A good win for the American ahead of the US Open.
When it comes to Andreeva, it's an okay loss and overall decent event. She won one match and got a feel for some hard-court tennis ahead of the US Open. Expect her to be better at the Grand Slam and likely more motivated than here. Stephens was a pretty tough matchup, to be fair.
She will face a qualifier that is yet to be determined.
