Mirra Andreeva is playing superb tennis at the start of this year but it's not translating to her being calm on the courts as she was quite nervous before the match at the 2024 Brisbane International.
Andreeva has had a good start to the year with some amazing performances in Abu Dhabi at the World Tennis League and now in Australia as well. The youngster is certainly proving that last year's runs were not by chance and that this year will bring more of that.
It's fascinating to observe because we have a 16-year-old who looks like she's been doing this for many years. In reality, it's only been a handful of months, and she still gets very nervous before every match which she confirmed to the WTA after winning yet another one.
Honestly, I was very nervous because it was match going to the quarterfinals and I've never been to the quarters yet. And I was really nervous before the match. And honestly, I thought that I would be super happy after the win, but I wasn't. Maybe for 10 minutes and then after I just already started thinking about the next match about tomorrow and I feel the same way.
Part of what makes Andreeva so appealing is just the honesty. Ever since she started to talk to the media regularly, there was a pretty clear affinity to speak her mind, which generally doesn't happen that often.
Most players add a filter on what they say, but not Andreeva. She just speaks her mind and admits her fears and being nervous on the court which is refreshing to see.
Despite all of that, she keeps playing amazing tennis and winning matches, and now she's in the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 tournament.
We'll see how far she goes, but there is a pretty solid chance she finds herself in her maiden WTA final in the first event in 2024.
