After playing one match earlier today, Iga Swiatek played another at the 2023 Poland Open, and it was going really well for a while, but it didn't finish.
Iga Swiatek was supposed to be only one match away from fulfilling her dream of winning a WTA trophy on native soil. The Polish player saw her Friday match pushed back to Saturday because of bad weather, which is why she had to play two matches today.
The first one earlier today was won comfortably by the Polish player sending her into the semi-final against Yanina Wickmayer, and the Belgian proved no match either. The first set was a relatively quick one at 37 minutes.
It was very impressive from Swiatek as she didn't allow her opponent to win a single service game breaking her three times while getting broken once herself and winning the set 6-1. For the most part, she simply overwhelmed Wickmayer from the baseline, which is hard to do as the Belgian can hit herself.
The second set opened well for both players as both Swiatek and her opponent had early break points. Neither was able to get the breakthrough until the Polish number one finally broke for the 3-2 lead in the second set.
She continued playing well, getting to a 5-2 lead with a chance to close out the match, but she didn't get as she got broken easily. Wickmayer then saved three match points on her own serve to make it 5-4 and then broke Swiatek once more for the 5-5 scoreline.
It was just an odd collapse from Swiatek, who completely lost focus at the worst possible time because the match actually got suspended due to darkness at 5-5. The organizers let it play on in hopes of allowing Swiatek to finish off the match but she couldn't do it, which means that she'll have to finish it off tomorrow.
