16-year-old tennis phenom Mirra Andreeva won't finish the year in the Top 50 on the WTA Tour after dropping out of it in the latest rankings update.
Finishing in the Top 50 of the year would have been a nice achievement for Andreeva, but it's hardly something that truly matters. She's done amazing things this year to improve her rankings so much that she can basically play regular WTA events from next year.
She belongs at the top after demonstrating tremendous skills this year, including a few deep runs at Grand Slams. She was only stopped by Coco Gauff at the Roland Garros and the US Open and almost made the Wimbledon quarter-final.
All of that allowed her to break into the Top 50, which happened on October 8th when she debuted at number 50. She would rise up to 46th on the rankings on November 5th but struggled to get past that due to inactivity.
This minor drop right now comes after she dropped 80 points from winning an ITF event in Israel last year. The drop puts her at number 57 right now, which is the ranking she'll most likely finish the year with.
It was still a huge year for the Russian, who started the year as world number 293 before dropping down to 312th before her major breakout at the Madrid Open. Since then, it's been a steady rise for a player who is likely to tackle the Top 20 if she sustains her level of play.
In any case, Andreeva finished the year with a 36-9 record, 15-9 on the WTA Tour, which is pretty good. We'll see what the future holds for Andreeva, but she has the backing of many greats to do some amazing things in the coming years. The 2024 season may be the real breakthrough year for the teenager.
