Oscar Otte was born on July 16, 1993, in Cologne, Germany, to Rolf and Wanda Otte. He began playing tennis with his father at the age of 6. Otte’s idols growing up were Andy Murray and Roger Federer.
The German spent the early years of his career competing on the ITF Futures Circuit. He reached 12 finals between July 2013 and March 2017, winning eight titles. These were on a combination of clay and hard courts, showing his versatility as a player from a young age.
Otte then reached his first two ATP Challenger Tour finals in April and June 2017. He was the runner-up in Qingado before claiming his first Challenger title in Lisbon, defeating Taro Daniel in the final. That was followed by four consecutive final defeats between June 2018 and September 2020. The streak of final losses was broken in Aix-en-Provence with a final win against Thiago Seyboth Wild.
Three more Challenger Tour titles followed at the end of 2021 in Ismaning, Ortisei, and Bari. Before the start of the 2021 US Open, Otte had registered four ATP Tour match wins. Two of these were at the Grand Slam level at the 2019 French Open and the 2021 Wimbledon Championships against Malek Jaziri and Arthur Rinderknech, respectively.
Otte then had a breakthrough in 2021 at Flushing Meadows. He began by defeating the 20th seed Lorenzo Sonego in four sets before easing past Denis Kudla in the following round in straight sets. The German then reached the fourth round by overcoming the veteran Andreas Seppi. His run was ended by Matteo Berrettini.
2022 was Otte’s first consistent year on the ATP Tour. He registered 19 wins in total and ended the season inside the Top 100. Highlights included getting his first main draw victory at the Australian Open and progressing to the third round at Wimbledon, where he lost to the future champion at SW19 Carlos Alcaraz.
The German has struggled since then. A loss of form and some injuries led to Otte falling outside the Top 400 in 2024.
