Daniil Medvedev didn't have the greatest of times on grass resulting in a former player advising him what to do.
Medvedev had a really good grass season last year making two finals (Den Bosch, Halle) but also losing both. He didn't do much outside of that because he was banned from Wimbledon as a Russian but this year will see him return to the event.
He once again played Den Bosch and Halle but lost rather early in both. It was Adrian Mannarino who beat him in Den Bosch while Roberto Bautista Agut proved better in Halle. It's an unfortunate sequence of results for Medvedev who has now lost early in the last three events he played just after doing the unimaginable and winning a trophy on clay in Rome, his first ATP 1000 on clay.
According to his own words, the grass is a surface that Medvedev likes yet it seems like a surface he still has some conflicting feelings about. After his win over Djere in Halle, Medvedev admitted that it's an odd surface to play on because you can be great and still lose.
Grass is so tough for me. You can actually play a perfect match and lose on two tie-breaks, so it’s a little bit strange for me.
He didn't manage to overcome a tiebreak against Bautista Agut and it was very disappointing for him. Former player Rennae Stubbs might have some advice for the Russian as she shared her thoughts about the match on social media.
I love when they pan to the team of the player and not the handshake! boy oh boy! also Meddy, you cant win on grass standing 10 feet behind the baseline buddy! ITS IMPOSSIBLE to win on the surface back there!
It's an interesting comment and likely rings true though Medvedev was able to make his playstyle work on the other surfaces so counting him out would be a mistake.
