Holger Rune and Stan Wawrinka met at the 2023 Indian Wells and while the match itself was very interesting, everyone waited for the handshake.
The previous time the two had a meeting in Paris, the seasoned Swiss player told his younger rival to "stop acting like a baby on the court" as they shook hands. His words of wisdom were given both following their match and the day before, when the young Dane had a heated argument with umpire Mohamed Layhani.
This time, Rune and Wawrinka fought on the court as the three-time Grand Slam champion prevailed in three sets to book his fourth-round spot. And after the match ended, the moment everyone was waiting for came.
The two shook hands and it seemed like a very respectful handshake with nothing being said. However, only a few seconds later, Rune couldn't resist as he remembered their last meeting and said:
"You got nothing to say now?"
Wawrinka, who probably felt that he said enough the last time, or that there wasn't anything to add, responded:
"What do you want me to say?"
After that, Rune replied to Wawrinka once more, but this time, the young Dane was too far from the microphones and so it was impossible to hear what he said to the Swiss player, who then even shared the interaction on his Twitter account along with laughing emojis.
Wawrinka, who is currently climbing up the rankings, was really happy about his win afterwards, and despite being 37 years old and playing a very difficult match, he was feeling good.
"I feel good. The last 45 minutes was tough. I had the match in control, was playing well. I was putting a lot of pressure, I should have won the match way before. I started feeling nervous and hesitated a little bit. He came back in the match. He is an amazing player, a young player. But it is special to keep winning. It was important to stay there mentally because I am playing well."
"I was trying to stay calm with myself. I lost to him already in Paris. All my career I know only one way. To keep fighting, working, pushing myself and stay positive. I am super happy with the win."
