Stefanos Tsitsipas won't be playing any more matches at the 2023 ATP Finals as he was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
When the Greek player retired only after 15 minutes against Holger Rune, it seemed to be quite obvious that he may not be able to continue at the event, but that is now official as Tsitsipas withdrew from the tournament.
After the match, he talked about his injury, which is a big injury, and revealed why he has decided to compete despite being unsure whether he would be able to finish the match. According to the Greek, if he would get an easy win, he may have been able to finish the match.
"Well, look, the tour is very demanding. We get to play a lot of matches during the year at a very high level and intensity. There's not a single match during the season that is easy, considered easy. There are maybe very few occasions that I would storm through a match 2-3, 2-1."
Speaking further about his injury, Tsitsipas believes that it's because of the fatigue. According to his own words, he pushed himself too much, and that's what was the cause of the injury.
"These matches don't quite happen that often on the tour. I do believe it's because of the maybe lack of rest, lack of getting my body to rest sometimes and properly prepare for big events. I am hunting a lot. I'm trying to get as much as possible regarding points, regarding the rankings. I really push myself to the limits."
Stepping in for Tsitsipas will be Hubert Hurkacz, who doesn't have a chance to make it to the semifinals anymore. However, the Polish player can earn some nice money, as well as ranking points, which may come in handy.
Hurkacz already tasted the court in Turin when he played an exhibition match against Taylor Fritz after the match between Tsitsipas and Rune ended quickly.
