Dominic Thiem provided an honest assessment of his current form as the former US Open champion criticized his own performances but also stated that he feels he is improving.

Throughout the 2022 season, Thiem experienced many upsets and the Austrian is still searching for his first title win following injuries and a dip in form. Thiem made his first appearance in April at the Serbian Open but lost to John Millman in the first round.

Five successive defeats followed the early elimination in Belgrade as Thiem tumbled down the ATP Rankings and out of the Top 100. His latest disappointment came at the 2022 Roland Garros, where he crashed out in the first round for a second consecutive season - losing to Hugo Dellien in straight sets.

After an unsuccessful Roland Garros, the Austrian has decided to withdraw also from the 2022 Wimbledon as he turns his attention to regaining form on his strongest surface of clay for the foreseeable future.

While Thiem stated that his performances had not been good enough during an interview with Kurier, the 2020 US Open winner felt he was getting back to form following a period of training in Barcelona with fellow ATP players.

"Now so slowly I see my old self coming back on the square. The strokes fit, I’m moving well again, I’m fit and I see really good progress every day. Of course I had to return to competition level at some point. But in retrospect, it just wasn’t enough and too weak for the level, you have to say that honestly."

"Actually, I’m doing very well, especially since Paris it’s really going up. For two and a half weeks after a few difficult days in Paris, where I had to find my way back into training, it’s fun again. I’m flying and I’m going to train there (Barcelona) for two weeks with Rublev and Khachanov, among others, which means I have top training partners."

Thiem has not played since his early elimination at the 2022 Roland Garros in May. However, the 27-year-old will be targetting his first win of the 2022 season as he prepares for an appearance at the Bastad Open, which is a clay-court event held in July.
