'Too Many Mental And Physical Tears': Berrettini On His Recent Issues

by Sebastian Dahlman

The 2023 season hasn't been very good for Matteo Berrettini, who struggled with his health and bad play when he found himself on a tennis court.

It's been a very tough year on the ATP Tour for Matteo Berrettini, who only had a couple of good results. The Italian surprised many with his Wimbledon run, considering that he didn't even think of playing at the event. It was the brightest moment of the season, but he needs more.

More is needed to build himself up to the level has was before. There are many issues and reasons why he struggled. He spoke to Corriere Della Sera, admitting that he struggled both physically and mentally, failing to find a good balance between the two sides.

I'm trying to figure it out, it's hard to make an objective analysis of what's going on in the body, made up of muscles and psyche, of each of us. In the last year I have experienced too many mental and physical tears. There were times when my head and body weren't aligned, asking too much of one or the other. I think I asked too much of my body.

My combative nature doesn't make me accept those physiological down moments that exist for everyone. If I'm in trouble I tend to speed up and it's not always right. If things don't work out, I'll put my head down and push. But it's a mistake. If your head is under the illusion that you are well and your body is sick, you pay the price I paid.

The Italian is hopeful to find some success in North America with his first match coming in Toronto against Gregoire Barrere. The Italian had plenty of success at the US Open and perhaps a return there will finally set him on the right path.
