'Equal Prize Money' Could Help Citi Open 'Improve' Even Further Says Pegula

Jessica Pegula won the event in Washington in the past but it's grown bigger since the time she won and it's a great thing to see.

Jessica Pegula had a really solid week at the WTA 500 event in Washington, and it didn't really surprise anyone. As a former champion who won the event back in 2019, Pegula likes to come back to the capital, and she had another good run.

It was cut short by Maria Sakkari, who defeated her in the semi-final, denying her another final at the Citi Open. It would have been a second one this year as the American looks to build upon her consistency and start to challenge seriously for big trophies.

The event has grown since the last time Pegula played. It's now a 500 event for both men and women and a joint event, giving the crowd a chance to see both Tours.

It's great seeing it be a 500. The depth and the field here was great. Super tough. I think the fans, at least in my experience, have always loved watching the women play here. To get to see an even bigger and deeper field is probably great for tennis here and great for the event.

A vocal advocate for prize money equality, Pegula once again took the chance to highlight that hoping to see the prize money become equal in the future. She likes the progress but as a very motivated individual, she wants to see more.

I think it's great that it's back on the calendar and it's joint. Hopefully we can get that up to equal prize money, as well. I think it will just help the event improve every year. Some girls that haven't played here before, so they really enjoyed it and didn't realize how much the fans really love the event.

I think that's really nice, knowing that the fans are really behind the event, especially the women here. That's ideally what we love to play when the fans are great. That's been something really nice to hear from some of the players that haven't been here.
