As Rafael Nadal continues to make strides in the world of tennis, his uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, sheds light on the evolving dynamic of their relationship.

In a candid interview with Marca, Toni reveals that while the two still share a close bond, he no longer provides career guidance to the 22-time Grand Slam champion. Toni Nadal, who was instrumental in coaching his nephew to 16 Grand Slam titles between 1990 and 2017, believes that it is inappropriate for him to continue offering advice.

He draws a parallel to Jose Mourinho's departure from Real Madrid, suggesting that it would be akin to the former manager still commenting on the club's performance a decade after his departure. While the professional relationship between the Nadals has shifted, the family bond remains strong.

"We usually see each other a lot. Obviously it has changed because I am not in his day to day. I have a normal uncle relationship. It's not up to me, I think it's not appropriate, it's as if Mourinho was making a comment about Real Madrid now."

In the interview, Toni also addresses concerns about Rafael's physical fitness, stating that the former world number one has made significant progress in his recovery. He emphasizes that Rafael would never step onto the court without being confident in his ability to win, assuring fans that his return to competition will be an exhilarating experience for all.

"I think he's much better, but it's unknown. Let's not fool ourselves, when he goes to compete he needs certain guarantees that he can win. I don't think he'll go out and play if he doesn't look I am convinced that it will go well. He is excited."

Currently, the 36-year-old Spaniard doesn't compete on the ATP Tour as he's recovering from an injury and his first two events should be the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters and the 2023 Barcelona Open.
