Dominic Thiem lost in the 2023 Estoril Open quarterfinals but he sees positives despite the loss.

Quentin Halys is higher ranked and playing better at the moment but it's still an upset loss for the one-time Grand Slam champion. Despite not being at his best for over a year, the name Dominic Thiem still means something in the tennis world.

It's been a painful experience for fans for a long time but there were some positives in this week. Two wins are a good building block for the upcoming clay events and perhaps he can build that confidence that is missing from his game this year.

I’m still very inconsistent. Serve wasn’t here today. It’s still a positive week for me, first time in 7 months that I win back to back matches, which isn’t obviously a great stat.

There were plenty of problems in today's match for Thiem but the loss doesn't look that bad with context. As he noted above the serve wasn't there but he was also playing a player who is playing some of the best tennis he has ever played in his career.

Halys was described by Djokovic as a player capable of playing top 10 level earlier this year in Adelaide and he is certainly playing on that level today. So in that regard it's not a terrible loss for Thiem and it's still a quarter-finals. His first of the year but hopefully not the last.

First ATP semifinal in such a nice tournament, but the work isn’t over! Dominic isn’t the same from other years, but he is still very tough to beat, specially on clay.

Halys on Thiem

Thiem signed up for several challengers events in the next few weeks so he's taking this part of the year seriously. It's a good chance for him to build some consistency because it's been a while since he played in a good rhytm. Getting into the main draw of Roland Garros is a stated goal of his so weeks like this are certainly helpful in that regard.
