The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters will be held from April 9th to 16th and the draw for this ATP 1000 event was released.
Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas triumphed at the picturesque Monte-Carlo Country Club and the Greek player will want to defend his title this year. The tournament was plagued by withdrawals as Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Felix Auger-Aliassime all withdrew, including many other players.
On the other hand, it created a space for some players that were initially not set to compete. Andy Murray will make his first appearance in six years, and Dominic Thiem was awarded a wild card so he'll also play in Monte Carlo.
But the biggest favourite will be Novak Djokovic. The Serb won the Monte-Carlo Masters only twice in his career, but thanks to withdrawals and his incredible form in 2023, he will have a chance to add his third this year. Like all the top eight seeded players, Djokovic has a bye in the first round, and in the second round, he will play against the winner of the match between Brandon Nakashima and Mackenzie McDonald.
The defending champion Tsitsipas looked closely at who would be his opponents as he attended the draw ceremony. The Greek will start his title defense and bid to win the third consecutive title at the event against the winner of the match between Benjamin Bonzi and Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
Daniil Medvedev isn't a big clay fan, but the third-seeded Russian will attempt to change that in Monte Carlo. In the second round, he will try to record his first clay-court victory of the season against Lorenzo Sonego or a qualifier.
Casper Ruud is still trying to find his old form this year, and the Norwegian will be the fourth-seeded player in Monte Carlo and start against Botic van de Zanschulp or a qualifier. The draw includes many interesting names such as Holger Rune who will meet Dominic Thiem or Richard Gasquet, but also Jannik Sinner who will play against Diego Schwartzman or David Goffin.
Some of the most interesting first-round matches include the meeting between Matteo Berrettini and Maxime Cressy, but also an anticipated clash of Andy Murray and Alex de Minaur. To see the full draw for the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, be sure to check it out below.
