Stan Wawrinka will take on Jannik Sinner at the US Open, hoping to create some exciting tennis in what might be an epic tennis match.
Not many expected anything out of Stan Wawrinka when he made his way back to tennis following a long injury absence. The Swiss player has been proving many people wrong this year, playing strong tennis and getting to a 26-16 record overall.
He's also made it to a final, though it was a losing effort in Umag earlier this year. Jannik Sinner has also been pretty decent, finally finding a breakthrough recently in Toronto. He won his maiden ATP 1000 trophy, confirming his good form ahead of the US Open.
His performances at the event certainly leave fans excited about him going all the way because it's been the best Grand Slam for him traditionally. Wins over Yannick Hanfmann and Lorenzo Sonego were quite good, and he's looking to add another one against Stan.
Head-to-head:
Wawrinka and Sinner played a couple of times already on the ATP Tour, and the Italian is leading the H2H. He's 3-2 overall, winning both matches this year. The first one happened in Rotterdam, and Sinner won it easily in two sets. The second happened in Indian Wells, and Sinner won easily in two sets.
Prediction:
It's pretty clear that Sinner has a clear matchup advantage and we're likely to see it again. Wawrinka played fairly well at the US Open so far, but his most recent win saw him show some weakness. It's not impossible for him to trouble Sinner, but I think that's not going to hold for the duration of the match.
The Italian is playing well, he's looking as confident as ever and eventually his baseline play will likely overpower Wawrinka. That's happened in the last three matches they played, including two earlier this year.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner in three sets.
