Jannik Sinner will be contesting the Canadian Open final against Alex de Minaur after beating Tommy Paul in the semi-final.

When Tommy Paul defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round of the Canadian Open in Toronto, all eyes went directly to Jannik Sinner. He became the biggest remaining name in the draw, with many assuming him to be the big favourite now.

Well, it certainly looked like that when he took on Paul. The American opened well taking an early break 1-0, but he lost his serve immediately after that. We saw the players trading blows in the next few games, but neither gained an upper hand.

Sinner would break first, take the 4-2 lead but then lose his serve to keep Paul in play. Eventually, the Italian still prevailed, taking the opening set 6-4. It was quite a balanced set with similar stats, but Sinner served a tiny bit better and played the crucial rallies better.

It was somewhat expected in ways because he has more experience when it comes to matches like these, and he's yet to win an ATP 1000 trophy, so he was very motivated. The second opened pretty similarly with a lot of battling, but Sinner was far more impressive. He was basically firing on all cylinders.

Confidence is a funny thing as it goes up and down rather quickly, but it makes a lot of difference in tennis. Both of them had plenty of confidence leading up to this match, Paul especially which allowed him to beat Alcaraz.

Despite carving out a break point, the American couldn't get it done, and that was costly. He would get another chance later on and this time around break but couldn't hold his serve as Sinner escaped in two. The final score was 6-4 6-3 for the Italian, who moves on to the final. Alex de Minaur awaits after he smashed Davidovich Fokina earlier today.
