Denis Shapovalov has more losses than wins this year and he just added another one at the Stuttgart Open against Marton Fucsovics.
Denis Shapovalov hasn't been having a very good year with more losses than wins to his name and it didn't change with a switch of surface. The Canadian hasn't just played poorly he's also struggled with injuries revealing recently that he doesn't have any specific goals recently, just being able to play pain-free would be a great start.
He certainly looked pain-free in this match as he actually had a really good start against a tricky player in Marton Fucsovics. Shapovalov took the opening set being the far more aggressive player as he had twice as many winners as Fucsovics. He also had 5 double faults which weren't very good but those were his only unforced errors along with 10 winners. That's a pretty good stat when you don't have any live-play errors.
The second set saw Fucsovics storm back as he played much better but he was also greatly helped by Shapovalov who didn't play very well. His 1st serve percentage was at 38 % and that's bad news, especially on grass. 6-3 was the score for Fucsvocis who has played pretty well recently pushing Djokovic quite it recently at Roland Garros.
His rhapsody continued in the final set against Shapovalov who was simply out of it by that time and continuing to struggle with his serve which is pretty crucial for him. He had no aces, four doubles faults, hit his 1st serve only 50 % of the time and despite pulling back one break late in the match, he couldn't turn things around completely as the Hungarian cruised to a 6-4 conclusion.
Started well but ended poorly for the Canadian who finished with only 2 aces, 11 double faults hitting the first serve only 43 % of the time. Not good enough.
