Holger Rune didn't have a strong showing at the Canadian Open in Toronto, but he'll still make a Top 5 debut on the ATP Tour after the event.

Holger Rune has been part of the Top 10 for a while after making the major breakthrough last year with the Paris Masters triumph over Novak Djokovic. He's been pretty good this year with some notable results but stumbled early at the Canadian Open, getting beaten by Marcos Giron.

It was a pretty shocking loss considering all the circumstances, but even so, the Danish number one is set to make his Top 5 debut on the ATP Rankings thanks to some other things going his way. It's mostly Casper Ruud failing to equal the result he had the previous year.

Ruud made the semi-finals in Toronto last year losing to finalist Hubert Hurkacz but this year he's out in the 3rd round. The Norwegian wasted a 5-3 lead in the final set against Davidovich Fokina which sent him packing early for Cincinnati.

That will cost him close to 270 points on the next ATP Rankings, enough to allow Holger Rune to move ahead of him. Projections have Ruud sitting at 4715 points in the next rankings while Holger Rune will have 4790. That's enough for the Danish player to move ahead and make his Top 5 debut at number 5.

He will have to wait a bit for a potential move further as he's out of the event himself but he'll have a decent chance next week. Stefanos Tsitsipas played in the Cincinnati Masters final last year and should he crash out early he'll lose most of those points.

Considering that Rune trails him only by 200 points, the Dane could possibly secure a number four rank ahead of the US Open. That would get him close to being number 1 even though he named winning a Grand Slam a bigger goal.
