Rafael Nadal has revealed that he and his protégé, Casper Ruud, are to embark on an exhibition tour of South America and Mexico at the end of November.
The pair announced the tour through a joint social media post in which Ruud jokes about asking for a rematch of the French Open final.
While this tour will be welcome news for tennis fans in South and Central America, it was announced alongside Nadal's revelation that he would not be participating in the Acapulco Open next year to defend his crown.
The ATP 500 event is a popular fixture on the tour, and one that the Spaniard has enjoyed much success at over the years, taking the title on four occasions. However, he will not be adding to that tally in 2023, casting doubt on whether he will play in Acapulco again before the end of his career.
"I'm excited to play in Mexico. Hopefully, the public will come to see us, and we can have a packed stadium. I have always felt very loved and supported, so I'm excited to play in Mexico City, with such a unique, symbolic environment," said Nadal.
"It will probably be one of the last times I can play in Latin America as a professional player. I will not defend my Acapulco title next year, and I'm not sure I can return to Mexico by the end of my career. That makes the upcoming match unique and special, and I want to enjoy it. I hope the Mexican crown will feel the same so that we can have an unforgettable day together," he added.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion last won the event earlier this year, as part of a scintillating 20 match-winning streak to start the season. But Mexican fans will now have to wait at least another year if they are to see him compete at the Acapulco Open again.
